Letter from Reverend Megan:
Chalice groups! What a wonderful way to do church!
Sure, it’s great to come to Sunday worship services, and it’s fun to talk to folks at coffee hour, and it’s rewarding to help out with the church work that needs to be done – but how do you really get to know people, deeply, authentically? When do you get the chance to not only listen to interesting people, but to talk about your own inspiring ideas – and your growth and change as a person of faith?
Chalice groups are the place for that.
Chalice groups are small groups, run by a trained facilitator, that allow for conversation and sharing that helps you explore your own path and learn about the experiences and journeys of others. You don’t need to bring anything, except yourself, and there aren’t any goals to be met, except for learning about yourself and those around you in a deeper way than everyday life generally allows. Come in, relax, and join in the discussion of the day.
Whether you’re new or have been around forever, chalice groups are a wonderful way to get to know others and yourself better. I encourage you to sign up and see for yourself, and experience SCUU in this deep and meaningful way.
Enjoy!
Rev. Megan Foley

Chalice Groups Frequently Asked Questions:
Who are Chalice Groups for?
Adults who want to participate – SCUU members, friends, visitors, neighbors. Chalice Groups are great for people who have been around SCUU for a while, for those who are brand new and everyone in between.
How much of a commitment am I making?
You will be agreeing to participate in a Chalice Group session twice per month with each session lasting about two hours. Your Chalice Group will also decide on a service project to complete as a group. That’s it. You won’t be asked to prepare anything to bring to the group. Rather, you will be bringing yourself, your experiences, your stories, your dreams, your concerns and asked to share with the group in a facilitated discussion as you are comfortable.
How will I know what to talk about?
Each Chalice Group session has a topic with short readings and questions for reflection. The facilitator will bring this to the group and gently guide the group as needed. Participants have found that once they begin discussing a topic, and hearing what others have to say, they find things to talk about that weren’t apparent to them at first. Participants generally find that the atmosphere of a Chalice Group quickly becomes supportive and safe which helps them not only learn about others, but learn about themselves as well.
What are the topics and who chooses them?
Some of the topics in previous Chalice Groups have been: Hope, Belonging in Community, Power of Beliefs, Caring, Fear and Respect. Some sessions have been taken from the free sessions available from the UU Small Group Ministry website, while others have been developed by the facilitators themselves. Suggestions for topics sometimes come from chalice group participants. Topics are chosen by the group facilitators and the program coordinator in collaboration with our minister, Reverend Megan Foley.
